Global simulation of Persistent Organic Pollutants

Global simulation of persistent organic pollutants
Sunling Gong, MSC/University of Toronto

Objectives:

  • To identify major reservoirs of POPs (e.g. PCBs in landfills) and start building historical PCB emission inventory for atmospheric model simulations
  • To develop a comprehensive 3-D global Persistent Organic Pollutant (POP) model interactive with multi-component size-distributed aerosols (CAM) in GEM-AQ
  • To investigate the transport patterns of POPs and estimate the contribution of various sources to Canadian POP levels using Canadian measurements
  • To improve parameterization of surface-air exchange processes of POPs by investigating and incorporating physicochemical properties and phase partitioning characteristics that control soil/vegetation-ar and ice/snow-air surface exchange processes
